Mobilizing Brazilian society to face HIV/AIDS by forming a network of solidarity: this was the idea that led sociologist Herbert de Souza - Betinho - and a group of professionals form various political and social movements to set up the Brazilian Interdisciplinary Association for AIDS-ABIA in 1986. Ever since, accompanying policies on public health, education and prevention, treatment and assistance, as well as human rights, has become ABIA's focus.

Today ABIA is affiliated to several national and international networks. The objective is to strengthen and extend the possibilities of forming partnerships and fostering cooperation with donor institutions, NGOs, governmental bodies, universities and social movements in Brazil and abroad. By holding workshops, discussion groups open to the public and seminars, ABIA promotes social participation and the search for knowledge, which are both fundamental actions for fortifying and enhancing the efforts of all those who work towards controlling the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
